He is Sandaruwan Wickrama.
A Sri Lankan artist living and working in Colombo. He is a person who has a very unique style and creative artistic thoughts, and is also extremely accurate and neat in his work. Also he has a good practice in completing this type of artworks by matching any color with colors of nature.
Sandaruwan first became interested in art while a student in middle school. Mostly self-taught, he worked in pen and ink sketches before discovering a whole new world of color in dried banana leaves. "In the tropics, banana leaves are an all-purpose material," explains Sandaruwan. We use them for cooking, for serving food, in our religous ceremonies and even for making paper.
As an artist, Sandaruwan was attracted to the infinity of hues and shades in dried banana leaves and began experimenting with them as an artistic medium in 2003. It can take hours to find just the right shades and carefully cut sections of leaf that go into making up a mosaic picture. His first project was a life-size six foot four inch traditional Sri Lankan dancer that took eight months of spare time to complete.
Sandaruwan now has a portfolio of 7 banana leaf mosaics. All materials are naturally dried and contain no chemical additives.
Artworks are done by a very experienced artist who has a good practice and the ability to give life to a particular artwork.
All the artworks are created, 100%, by using naturally-dried parts of the banana tree. There maybe thousands of tiny pieces in a single artwork. They are pasted on a fabric and no other materials (not even an additional pen mark) have been used in creating the artwork.
No chemical treatments are applied to the artwork, thereby enabling the natural colors of the piece of work to flow through.
The frame of the artwork or the way it has been attached to the frame can be done according to your requirements.
This is a very unique product that has a very high demand.
No chemical treatments are applied to the artwork, but is guaranteed from experience that the product will not get damaged or change any of the colors. The only suggestion is that the product be kept away from water. Thus, the product will last for hundreds of years.
Should some damage come to your product, we are able to repair/restore it to its original condition.
